Area & Perimeter

Spec reference: Geometry and measures - Mensuration
Key idea: Calculate the area and perimeter of 2D shapes including circles and composite shapes.

Perimeter

Perimeter is the total distance around the outside of a shape.

Area formulae

ShapeArea
RectangleA=lw
TriangleA=12bh
ParallelogramA=bh
TrapeziumA=12(a+b)h
CircleA=πr2

Circles

Circumference=πd=2πrArea=πr2

Example

Find the area and circumference of a circle with radius 5 cm.

A=π×52=25π78.54 cm2C=2π×5=10π31.42 cm

Sectors and arcs

Arc length=θ360×2πrSector area=θ360×πr2

Composite shapes

Break into simpler shapes, calculate each area separately, then add (or subtract).
